Columbia is a census-designated place and the People Tree statue has become its symbol. It is also Maryland's largest unincorporated community with it's 94,600 residents. Columbia, one of the planned cities of the seventies located in the middle of Howard County and developed by James W. Rouse opened in 1967 and still maintains its unique characteristic of a "green" city. The ambiance of the planned landscape and lakes is unmistakably inviting and relaxing.
